Increase 2.4GHz wireless camera range

We are often asked by customers how you can  increase wireless camera range on a 2.4GHz spy camera or surveillance camera system.

Our 2.4GHz cameras use 10mW transmitters.  10mW is the maximum output power for a 2.4GHz wireless camera allowed (without a license) within the UK so without using a higher powered but illegal transmitter the only way you can really try to increase wireless range is by using a high gain 2.4GHz antenna on your wireless camera or 2.4GHz receiver.

Most of the 2.4GHz wireless cameras on the market have fixed antennas and so don’t have the reverse SMA 2.4GHz fitting that you need in order to connect a high gain antenna.  So, the next best thing is to connect a high gain antenna just to the receiver end of your 2.4GHz system.

This is easily done as your 2.4GHz receiver will almost certainly have the revers SMA fitting mentioned earlier.  Connecting, for example, a 7dBi antenna could double your wireless range and improve image stability.

As always wireless signals are variable and the actual site environment (obstructions, other wireless equipment etc) can play a part but if you’re struggling and want to try to increase range and stability then a 2.4GHz high gain antenna on your receiver certainly will not do any harm.

  • Nice blog. I ‘d appreciate if you could mention high gain 2.4 GHz directional antenna. A directional antenna could even further increase the range. Also, an RF amplifier on the receiver-end could make a great difference.

  • I purchased a camera system from walmart. What a mistake. Bad quality products. I guess you get what you pay for. I found CCTV Boss via google and whilst they were not the cheapest to buy from, they sure knew their products and the service was great.
